Converting you into a 3d world. Second Life Microsoft Kinnect Hacks

Using SL has always been a bit disjointed at a party for example you have to use animations created by others or struggle with developing your own.Since the XBOX Kinnect developers have been working on hacks that can help meet this problem. This is worth a look :)

don Berithos EPI EMMONS MEMORIAL DAY Skutsje Races Winner 2011

It was a good day and beautifully arranged by Pippa Rexen (the Late Epi's Wife).

Pippa Emmons with a very happy don at the awards ceremony :)

I created a custom trophy for the event that has a number of meanings.

The Dutch Barge is one he helped me design and a scale version - so quite big but its weight and inertia does it justice - it does look wonderful at speed. This sits on a wave shaped hand carrying his barge to heaven, around the base are 47 discs that add up to his age at death. Only 47 years old (his 48th year).

After some confusion :) the early procession finally made it to Spoon Drift (cut water party area). Where the prizes were arranged and people relaxed and danced. Then it was time for the races. Although it was a one design event for the SWB Dutch Barge, this was something that other barges wanted to be part of - and quite right too. It would have pleased epi as he loved his green turtle barge.

So a prize was hastily made available for the winner of that class too :)

I shot some video and hope to put together a video of the event soon.

The racing was fierce and some VERY close finishes!!!

don came out on top but it was no picnic. This will be an annual event in Epicurus Emmons' memory, someone we need to never forget, Delinda Dryssen, was also mentioned another good friend who was lost recently.

If you want to get in training for next year then this is the boat
https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/DUTCH-BARGE-10-SKUTSJE-Sailing-Boat-Racing-Wind-Powered-Bargain-Price/326253 The price is very low to encourage people into sailing, something I have maintained from the time of Kanker and it was Epi's philosophy - do not price people out of sailing - I remember that first time in Second Life when I had no money to spare, and had to 'camp' to make enough to buy a Tako, Good long useable demos are also a must! For this reason there is also a free demo available from my mall :)

My Eulogy Log
[14:36] BeeJee Boucher: and sometimes we made them happen
[14:36] BeeJee Boucher: One day i found a skutsje for sale and i asked Epi to come and check it out.
[14:37] BeeJee Boucher: And many of you know what followed after that, for a while SL sailing was skutsje crazy.
[14:37] BeeJee Boucher: We even made it to SLTV
[14:37] Aislin Keynes: :-)
[14:37] BeeJee Boucher: Thats just one memory, one memory of many.
[14:37] BeeJee Boucher: Some i cant discuss here cuz they are too naughty.
[14:37] Chad Sawson: lol
[14:37] BeeJee Boucher: That was Epi too, sometimes he even made me blush...and wanting too look elsewhere.
[14:37] Orca Flotta: tsk
[14:37] BeeJee Boucher: i remember Sweet ;)
[14:38] BeeJee Boucher: And still those are the moments you realize that behind every silly avatar there is a very real person.
[14:38] BeeJee Boucher: And yes biggies look silly to me.
[14:38] Chad Sawson: lol
[14:38] BeeJee Boucher: I have one confession to make.
[14:38] Orca Flotta: ;)
[14:38] Jane Fossett: grin
[14:38] BeeJee Boucher: When Epi wrote his book we often talked about it in depth,
[14:38] BeeJee Boucher: but till this day i haven't read it.
[14:39] Nber Medici: LOL
[14:39] BeeJee Boucher: I am not a big reader but I know what it's about
[14:39] BeeJee Boucher: And although Epi told me he wasn't religious like the real Epicurus,
[14:39] BeeJee Boucher: as he writes in his book
[14:39] Orca Flotta: it's not about sailing, unfortunately
[14:39] joepie Korobase: :)
[14:39] BeeJee Boucher: it somehow comforts me to think
[14:39] BeeJee Boucher: that he now is sailing his skutsje in the sky with another very dear skutsje loving friend we lost last december.
[14:40] BeeJee Boucher: Del, Epi have fun. Just wait until we catch up...and we will
[14:40] BeeJee Boucher: i wanna close with the words from a shantysong called A Sailors Farewell Hymn, writer unknown.
[14:40] BeeJee Boucher: It's our time to go now,
Haul away your anchor,
It's our sailing time.
[14:40] BeeJee Boucher: Get some sail upon her,
Haul away your halyards,
It's our sailing time.
[14:40] BeeJee Boucher: Get her on her course now,
Haul away your fore sheet,
It's our sailing time.
[14:40] BeeJee Boucher: Waves are rolling under,
Haul away down Channel,
On the evening tide.
[14:41] BeeJee Boucher: When my days are over,
Haul away for heaven,
God be by my side.
[14:41] BeeJee Boucher: It's our time to go now,
Haul away your anchor,
It's our sailing time.
[14:41] BeeJee Boucher: .
[14:41] BeeJee Boucher: bye Epi
[14:41] Pippa Rexen: sigh...thank you BJ
[14:41] Nber Medici: nice ?
[14:41] BeeJee Boucher: chad
[14:41] Chad Sawson: Thank you Beejee!
[14:41] Surfwidow Beaumont: :*')
[14:42] Chad Sawson: Another long time SL Sailing community member Ms. Surfwidow Beaumont is next. Surfy? :-)
[14:42] Surfwidow Beaumont: If I crash I'll be back as the terminator said. So bear with me ;)
[14:43] Chad Sawson: lol
[14:43] Surfwidow Beaumont: Wow this is difficult, when I made his remembrance video i must have broke down in tears a number of times.
[14:43] Surfwidow Beaumont: So here we go - deep breath!
[14:43] Surfwidow Beaumont: There are many words that we could use to describe epi and the fun he shared with us all - most of which are too rude to say here ;) but one that sums him up succinctly would be
[14:43] Surfwidow Beaumont: Charismatic
[14:43] Chad Sawson: bravo
[14:44] Pippa Rexen: good grief and I thought he was a prude [from what HE said]
[14:44] Surfwidow Beaumont: That word is bandied about often in television and for heads of state, but on a more local level I think epi embodied that perfectly.
[14:44] BeeJee Boucher: :)
[14:44] Surfwidow Beaumont: The dictionary states it thus
a. A rare personal quality attributed to leaders who arouse fervent popular devotion and enthusiasm.
b. Personal magnetism or charm
[14:44] Surfwidow Beaumont: I am sure you will agree he fits the bill well.
[14:45] Orca Flotta: a + b
[14:45] Surfwidow Beaumont: Lets just look at a. for a moment

Leadership.
[14:45] Surfwidow Beaumont: It was almost as if Secondlife was created for him. Wherever he went people just approached him and wanted to listen to what he had to say.
[14:45] Surfwidow Beaumont: It may well have been his expertise in philosophy and his ability to deliver messages in a non patronising way people liked.
[14:45] Surfwidow Beaumont: He had time for people, as his all too short life shows, if we had a moment of his time that was a minute from his life we had, and for that we should be eternally grateful.
[14:45] Pippa Rexen: that's his HR training
[14:46] Surfwidow Beaumont: ,
[14:47] Surfwidow Beaumont: For some we took hours of it, hours he gave freely for very little benefit to himself. Hovering over many a raceline organising events and overseeing races, truly a very giving person.
[14:47] Jane Fossett: HR= Hollywood Racing?
[14:47] Chad Sawson: :-)
[14:47] Surfwidow Beaumont: sorry bit laggy
[14:48] Surfwidow Beaumont: For this he was rewarded with the second part of a) above

Devotion.
[14:48] Pippa Rexen: Ha no Jane...Human Resource
[14:48] Surfwidow Beaumont: He had devoted friends and apart from the obvious Pippa and Fanci and other's, i am proud to have been one of them and of course Beejee Boucher too - you all know who you are and the list would swamp this eulogy if said.
[14:49] Chad Sawson: agreed
[14:49] Surfwidow Beaumont: He also had devotion from Sim owners who knew and trusted him with their reputations. Boat designers and creators who trusted his feedback when developing new boats and beta testing them. He bought my first ever product a air horn - he was just a nice guy who wanted to keep people enthused,
[14:49] Surfwidow Beaumont: If epi needed help or support we would all come running. If he needed anything created to assit him further we all came to his aid.
[14:49] Xi Larnia: sheet 10
[14:49] Xi Larnia: sheet -1
[14:49] Surfwidow Beaumont: I doubt i would have stayed were it not for him - So I owe him a lot in that sense. I was always ready to come to his aid and help him in anyway i can and this applies till this day - ever since.
[14:49] Surfwidow Beaumont: He helped me with my Dutch Barge - I had no clue without him hovering there at Boogdolt telling me off :'*) - laughing, "the sculpti sides look like sausages! Make them thinner!" he'd say!" After a day of trying, "hmmm that'll have to do i suppose." ;) I just wanted to please him too :). I have fond memories of helping him with the sailing lecture images sitting in his tako snapping away, happy days and times.
[14:50] Surfwidow Beaumont: Enthusiasm

This is a very obvious, there are so many photos of him teaching people how to sail and them getting out on the water as a result.
[14:50] Surfwidow Beaumont: Keeping the momentum and enthusiasm going is not easy, We have all seen some apathy in the sailing community from time to time, "Where have all the flowers gone?" Well epi is a whole garden thats disappeared now, and thats a space i doubt will be filled easily if at all! As they say we don't often mis something we take for granted until it's gone - and boy do I miss him now.
[14:50] Renault Cluny: is chair next to you empty?
[14:50] Surfwidow Beaumont: So we should appreciate these people more when they are here. Looking around I can see many who go unnappreciated and deserve more suport and respect. Let that be one of epi's legacies eh?
[14:50] Surfwidow Beaumont: Personal magnetism or Charm

Well Epi had many friends and many girls had a crush on him. But of course Pippa was clearly the soul mate who he knew was 'Mrs Right' and we all remember fondly the in-world wedding, whilst he was no doubt struggling to cope with, Pippa helping him along the way.
[14:51] Surfwidow Beaumont: Thank you for allowing us to be part of that Pippa it was my pleasure to create that lasting memory for us all to see, of course later you can still watch that wonderful wedding in full here http://blip.tv/file/4035807 but like any magnet - it needs a reverse polarity to stick and Pippa was that person.
[14:51] Surfwidow Beaumont: His Charm of course will remain with us and is his lasting memory for me especially.
[14:51] Surfwidow Beaumont: I think he'd be moved by the people turning out here today for him. But i am also pretty sure he'd want us to carry on and enjoy sailing and keep the pressure on for more investment in sailing, more time given by others to help and above all enjoy it as he did.
[14:51] Chad Sawson: :-) absolutely
[14:51] Surfwidow Beaumont: Perhaps a Regular Epicurus Emmons Memorial Trophy event? I'd happily put up some prizes :)
[14:52] Surfwidow Beaumont: Ill leave you with two final things

1. If you never knew epi I think this will help you understand just what he meant to us and to Second Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3xzgUEVM-EIll leave you with two final things

1. If you never knew epi I think this will help you understand just what he meant to us and to Second Life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3xzgUEVM-E
[14:52] Surfwidow Beaumont: 2. I'd like to thank you all for buying the Remembrance Flowers. I will pass it across to Pippa as a small token towards his Floral tributes in Real Life once all the dispensers have been returned. I'd also like to thank those YC Commodores, sim owners and friends of Epi for hosting them. If you do not as yet have a flower there are more for sale over there by the memorial boat only 25L.
[14:52] Surfwidow Beaumont: What those flowers show is no matter what few lindens people had Epi mattered to them, they bought them, and they wore them with pride, a lasting inventory reminder of his name that a couple hundred people will happen across from time to time and go, "Oh yeah Epicurus Emmons!" I remember him x

And don't you forget it either ;*')
[14:53] Chad Sawson: :-)
[14:53] Surfwidow Beaumont: This is a sad time but it is also a celebration of his life and what he meant to us.
[14:53] Surfwidow Beaumont: I think it is fitting we all cheer and applaud him now.

This is for you Epi

Sail with Us! Video - To encourage Sailing in Second Life

In association with Charlz Price who supported the video of the J-class with Jane.

We have put together a homage to the history of sailing in Second Life - Sail With Us! - from Takos to Big Cats to protests to Fizz and much much more - to be used to encourage people to sail in Second Life. You can stream it in world using this URL in your media parcel too - http://blip.tv/file/get/Surfwidow-ComeSailWithUs328.MP4 this is specifically crushed down to stream at 768kbs mp4 QT format in media parcels (like the BBC iPlayer format so most broadband connections in world can view it without it stuttering and sticking and choking their otherwise already overloaded connections speed just coping with Second Life textures as they move ;)P

If you want to see higher quality you'll have to pop over to YT and see it there in full at 480 format feel free to comment there too :) as well as here ;)

I think we all need cheering up after what happened to Epi and this is a good way to do it.

It runs to a fast and exciting bombastic track and runs 'at a pace'.

There are so many 'Easter eggs' in this video you may have to watch it a number of times but a few worth mentioning are of course some special ones

In particular

3mins 55 : Epicurus Emmons at 4mins 39 is Epi, me and Beejee at Fisher's Island dancing Epi has the blue tshirt on over the white long sleeved undershirt he is in the center as always ;)PXxx
and of course
Delinda Dyrssen and many other are in there dotted about.

To quote Charlz Price when he first saw it, "you really need to watch it 10 times to see it all!"

Sorry if we missed anyone but chances are you are still actually there as like the intro of the Simpsons I add this quick scene at 4mins 20 is just about every boat ever made in one aerial shot of the 'grand protest sail' at Hollywood so no complaints on that LOL. And you were probably at a parties or in a Tako somewhere too or in the crowd watching them ;)P

Enjoy!

You may well need a lie down after watching this though! ;) hahaha LOL.

Remembering Epicurus Emmons - The Video

This is for all those that want to see him again having fun and grieve his passing.

Warning - it maybe hard to watch the second part as its heartbreaking.

Hugs Pippa - this is for you.

It is with great sadness i have to post this video.

It is perhaps the most difficult thing i have ever had to do in Second Life. Editing it was particularly difficult and distressing.

I am kinda numb to it now.

It is more or less in two parts, the joy, and the loss. Watch it till the VERY end.

It is ad supported simply because the commercial track i wanted to use is copyrighted and the artists have to be paid.

Karen (Pippa) has given me special permission to reveal the real life them in the film.

And it shows the wonderful and clever intellectual man behind the av.

It also gives people who did not know Epi an insight of what Second Life has lost.

Chances are if you enjoy sailing then someone near you was taught by him or knew him well.

The Video

Whilst you can watch it here I strongly recommend you visit the main site here

and watch it full screen at 640 x 480 resolution to fully appreciate it right till the end.

Epicurus Emmons (Marcel) died 10th March 2011.

I'll open this with a shocking message sent to us yesterday.

"It is with the deepest sense of loss that I have to inform all of our friends here on Second Life that, after 18 months fighting with a brain tumour that kept coming back, my darling Epi passed away at 8.55 p.m. UK time on 10th March. I was at his side holding his hand talking to him and comforting him. My mother, sister and daughter [who he considered as his own] were with me.

I will forever be grateful that Fanci brought us together and that we shared our lives for what time he had left.

I will never forget him or the love we shared because - I carry his heart in my heart and I always will."

Pippa Rexen
March 2011

---

Over the years i have sat in many a boat with 'epi' (Marcel), he truly loved Second Life and the joy it brought him not only in-world but in his real life later. He quickly became a respected member of the sailing community and ran the original yacht club at Fisher's Island for a period of time. This is where i first met him. Because i liked wacky things in Second Life i attended some sailing classes at Hollywood YC. There i met a number of people, one of which was Abella Beck, who had a store selling sails on the island in Sailors Cove. She said you like nutty things I know someone like you and teleported me over to Fisher's Island - many years ago now - She said, "this is Beejee and Epicurus," they were two Dutch guys who really enjoyed what SL had to offer. We instantly hit it off and we firm friends from that day. That moment was probably a turning point for me as until then i felt very lost in there.

I sold epi my very first product in Second Life that i built in a sand box called a 'Woot Airhorn'.

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Woot-Air-Horn-Party-sound-Boat-Sound/326271

I said, "here what do you think of this?!!!" Epi sitting at his desk in the club headquaters there at FI said, "thats cool i'll buy it from you!" "$100L!" I said, "nah thats ok make it half price," LOL, and those horns sold in their droves and set the creative spark going - never looked back.

So he was also encouraging of others to make the best of SL as well as a mentor to many sailors who needed a careful hand of guidance he could offer.

I worked with him on a series of training images for his clubhouse here is an example.

Shortly afterwards i became interested in filming in Second Life and again after the America's Cup for 9th.com video he was instantly interested in producing a little video short about sailing in and around Fisher's Island and here is that very film. Of course in comparison to the wedding video later it is less quality but it does show epi enjoying what he did most and it is his boat crossing the line at the end - appropriate considering.

His love of the Dutch Barges and sailing them in SL encouraged me to create a scale sized version, he oversaw every aspect of that, and to be honest that's more his boat design than mine :) Even today if you take out my Dutch Barge

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/DUTCH-BARGE-10-SKUTSJE-Sailing-Boat-Racing-Wind-Powered-Bargain-Price/326253

You will see on the free demo version available at my mall in Boogdolt, Weston Marina on the sails it says 'SKUTSJE MUSEUM' that he created some time ago.

Relationships

I am sure he had no shortage of girls after him in SL but one in particular captured his heart and he became smitten' that of Pippa, a charming and lovely girl who has been a tower of strength through all his illness.

He then married the love of his life Pippa Rexen in real life as well as Second Life.

At that time we were all aware that he was gravely ill, just at a time he had launched his book in real life based on philosophy of Epicurus (ironically). So an intellectual man too.

His Book (now also available in English is called 'De remedie van Epicurus', and the publisher is ASPEKt, NL. The author's name is Marcel Verweij.

His wedding I knew may well be his last appearance in Second Life so i went all out to create them a video of it as a wedding gift to them both but most of all Pippa so she had something wonderful to remember of him in SL.

Here is that video if you would like to watch it.

Here is the video and the opening music track is particularly poignant :'*)

http://surfwidowsweb.blogspot.com/2010/08/epicurus-emmons-and-pippa-rexen-wedding.html

During his illness his dear wife Pippa kept us fully informed as to his progress, the ups and downs, the surgery and the moments of hope, that extended the short precious time they had left together.

I'll leave you with some more photos of epi doing what he did best :)

(This was very hard to write :'*( ).

There will be a memorial in due course in SL to celebrate his life perhaps a big sailing regatta?

There is a memorial Skutsje here in SL pop by and pay your respects.

It reads

"Fear of Death is unecessary. That is precisely why this gives me peace of mind and a positive and meaningful life."

The quote is very apt and something his life was influenced by.

Bon Vent! My friend!

We'll miss you.
